Our Story

In LCCC’s Constitution, we state five purposes:  to promote the preservation and protection of the natural resources of Lake County, Florida; to enhance civic awareness of present and potential dangers to the environment; to promote responsible growth management; to cooperate with other conservation and environmental groups in the area for our common purposes; and to advise civic authorities on conservation and environmental matters.

For many decades, conservation has been a major concern of Lake County residents.  Longtime local naturalist Nadine Foley reviewed Lake County’s conservation history at the Conservation Symposium at Trout Lake on April 30, 2022.  According to Ms. Foley, LCCC played a big role in conservation advocacy for several decades.  Then, in 2010, LCCC became inactive.

In 2021, however, a renewed interest in conservation swept over our county because of dangerous algae blooms in our lakes and because of a county-wide population explosion.  We recruited over 50 members and elected new officers on April 26, 2021.

Since then, we have hosted many online forums and set up exhibits at several events.  Along with fourteen other environmental groups, we hosted the Conservation Symposium at Trout Lake in April of 2022.  Then, in March of 2023, we were one of 12 conservation groups which hosted the EcoExpo at Lake-Sumter State College in Leesburg, FL.

We maintain a lively face book page.  After researching the issues, our corresponding secretary writes advisory letters to government officials. Our “Legal Notices” group keeps our members informed about important hearings and meetings. To receive legal notices, please send your email address to Karen West at west.k9@gmail.com.

LCCC has maintained its status as a Florida not-for-profit corporation since 1987.  We are a 501(c)(4) organization, which means that our income is not taxable, but dues and donations are not tax deductible for the donor. Under IRS rules, we are permitted to advocate on political issues, but we do not support or oppose political parties or candidates.
